Born as Shuifen Ding in Zhejian China in 1927, Ms. Ding was a Yue Opera singer. Made her debut as an opera singer in Shanghai China in 1947. She sang male roles as Yue Opera singers were primarily women. Ms. Ding sang the leading male roles with her own opera company The Swan Yue Opera Group from 1952 to 1954. The performances were in such high demand the audiences stood in line 24/7 to buy tickets. She attracted large followers in the college and high school population. Ms. Ding joined the state opened Shanghai Opera company in 1954, and stayed there as a lead singer until her death in 1984 due to lymphoma. From 1962 to 1965, the Great Wall Movie Enterprises Limited in Hong Kong invited Ms. Ding to take on the leading male roles of their 3 upcoming opera films. The 3 films were not distributed in mainland China at the time despite the huge box success in Hong Kong and Singapore.
