Matsumoto Wakana was born in the western Japan prefecture of Tottori in Yonago, which is a port town, on 25.02.1984. She is the youngest of three sisters. She belonged to the school brass band playing clarinet while in high school. Matsumoto reports that she was scouted at age fifteen in her hometown but declined the advance. Instead, she graduated from high school and began working various jobs such as a receptionist at a cosmetics company (interestngly she would star in Cosmetic Wars years later), at a hair salon and in a cafe. She moved to Tokyo in 2006, obtained a job and attended auditions. She became active in the entertainment industry in 2007 with an appearance in Kamen Rider Den-O, which is part of the famous and prolific series.
